This blog is about a 33 and 43 year old who became pregnant after two IVF cycles. We made many protocol and lifestyle changes with our second IVF you can read about on the sidebar. While we are basking in the hope of meeting our baby, our feet are planted firmly on infertile ground. Through surgeries, a DOR diagnosis, losing six embryos, and the miscarriage of a twin... if your life is still revolving around vials and needles... we hope to share our success story with you.

Matters of the Heart

I'm just getting in from my second official OB appointment at 12w1d.  Here's the breakdown...

1.  Weight - I have gained exactly zero pounds in the first trimester.  Although the goal was to lose weight, I am happy with maintaining.  In case you did not know, I have gained an enormous amount of weight throughout two IVF's.  The doctor even wants me to maintain this weight through the second trimester as well.  That means that for every pound of baby weight I gain, I need to lose IVF weight.  Which brings us to topic #2...

2.  Exercise - The doctor said I have her complete support to power walk - not run, not 30 day shred...power walk.

3.  S-E-X - We also got the go ahead for this.  I've pretty much been a nun since May, so YES it's time.

4.  Endometrin vaginal inserts - I get to stop these today as well.  Her official answer to explain the most recent bleeding?  Definitely the Endometrin inserts for 15 weeks.  She said there's no way I can do those inserts for 15 weeks and not get irritated to the point of bleeding.  Poor cervix.  I do want to clarify that we did see hemorrhages in the first few weeks, it's only the recent bleeding being caused by Endometrin.

5.  Heart rate - When she whipped out the Doppler, I wasn't even nervous.  I've become used to having good, even great, ultrasounds even in the midst of blood.  The baby's heart rate was 165.  She was chasing the baby around with the Doppler.  He/she was very mobile.  Suddenly, we heard a loud POOF and I jumped. She said the baby kicked the Doppler.  It was very adorable.  If you've followed my blog for anytime now, you know that my husband is 6'7".  The baby sounds like it may have Daddy's long legs.

6.  Boy or Girl - Once the doc started listening to the heart rate, she asked "What do you think you are having?"  I said, "Oh,  definitely a girl."  And she said, " I think so too."  I told her that I couldn't believe she was committing to a gender at 12 weeks.  She told me that since my heart rates have been between 180 and 153, she would be shocked if the baby was not a girl.  I texted my sister after the appointment.  She has a 3 year old boy.  She replied to me that his heart rate was always in between 125 and 135.

So, if you are reading this and you've had a babe, could you tell me boy or girl and what their heart rates were?  What does this sound like to you?

So that's it in a nutshell.
Endometrin? Stop.
Weight? Exercise.
Heart rate? 165.
Sex? Yes, please.

We're officially just five days from the second trimester with a happy, healthy Baby H!

I am so excited for you. I love reading your blogs. You give me hope that everything we are going through (IVF #2) may very well be worth it. BTW - I switched to your old doctor and I agree - love her so much. KSKP.

I laughed out loud when I read that the baby kicked the doppler! Way too cute. My baby's heartbeat has been in the 170's. I hope I'm having a girl then! But I might be in denial that I think it's a boy. Who knows?!

Have a great weekend!!

I have to admit I'm really surprised your doc said that. Its a proven old wives tale (google it) and there's lots info on the web that shows that the heartrate has no correlation with sex. So don't buy pink... yet! :)

I've heard it was an old wives tale too! Landons HB was around 150-165 though most of the time when I was pregnant though.
SOOOOO glad to hear all is well. You had me scared when I didnt see an update for a little while!
So happy to follow you though this journey!!!

My OB said it has nothing to do with their gender and everything to do with their activity level. Ocean had girl type HR's so we thougth we would have two girls. He is just a very active boy! Ocean and Ever's HRs were always very similar, with her being a touch higher.

I have boy-girl twins, and their heart rates were always very close (within 5 or 10 BPM of each other) and neither was reliably higher or lower. I was in the hospital for a month before they were born and I was on the fetal monitor 1-4 hours per day, so there were hundreds of opportunities to measure, and there really was no difference.

What a great appointment and I am so glad you got such great news all around!! We waited to have sex too and when we were given the all clear it was freaky at first as we were both being so careful but after a while you learn to relax again!
About the heartbeat, Izzy's heart has always been around the 150-165 mark.. I have a gut feeling you are having a girl too!! Not too long to go before you find out for sure, then the shopping and nursery planning can start!!! How exciting!!
